AFTERCARE

Tips & Tricks to aid your healing
Personalised aftercare is provided at your appointment

NEW PIERCINGS

Clean your piercing twice a day using a sterile saline solution. Neilmed aftercare is availble to buy in studio.

Avoid cotton buds as these can leave fibers behind and irritate the piercing site. Kitchen roll is perfect.

Dry your piercing thoroughly after cleaning to aid healing using a hairdryer on a cool setting, or a fresh piece of kitchen roll.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Swelling is normal and this is why we use longer jewellery initially. You can downsize to smaller jewellery in a few weeks as advised at your appointment
Some yellowish/ whitish discharge is also a normal part of the healing process
Healing bumps can also occur & usually resolve themselves with consistent cleaning. Warm salt water compresses can also be used if these arise.

WHAT TO AVOID

Twisting or turning your jewellery
Touching your piercing
Changing your jewellery before it is due to be changed
Don't use tea tree oil or make up your own salt water solution to clean your piercing. It's really hard to make it to the correct ratios and in a hygienic enough way at home.
Don't apply any skincare or make up around the site of your piercing
Don't go in the sauna or swimming during your initial healing period

FOR EARS

Avoid sleeping on a new piercing for a few weeks at least. Using a travel pillow to sleep will really help avoid aggravating your piercing during initial healing.
Avoid getting your hair caught around the jewellery as much as possible as this will aggravate the new piercing. Clip hair away from the piercing during the night
Make sure to clean after washing your hair and keep your wet hair away from the piercing

FOR NOSES

Nose piercings can be prone to keloids, where dead skin cells become clogged when healing a new piercing. They are usually small red bumps around your piercing and can be resolved through consistent cleaning. If you think you’re experiencing this get in touch so I can provide appropriate advice.
Avoid make up and skin care around the site of your new piercing as much as possible.

FOR SURFACE PIERCINGS

Surface piercings have 2 exit points and as such are technically 2 piercings, so can take longer to heal.
They are more prone to migration, where your body rejects the jewellery and the piercing can move or be pushed out of your body. If left in when migrating, jewellery will eventually be pushed out the body, leaving a scar.
If you think you’re experiencing this get in touch so I can provide appropriate advice.

FOR ORAL PIERCINGS

After eating or drinking, rinse with non-alcoholic mouthwash.
Avoid spicy food – this will aggravate your new piercing
Avoid diary – this will reduce the amount of mucus you produce & promote healing. Reduce as much as possible or cut out for at least the first 2 weeks following your piercing.
Avoid fermented food and drink for example beer, wine, kimchi
After 2 – 4 weeks you can downsize to smaller jewellery.
